    This is a working guide of Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 SM-T819 TWRP recovery and rooting guide. Here I am explaining how to update TWRP and root the Tab S2 T819 2016 variant with simple step-by-step guide and screenshots.

    After rooting you can install many android mods such as Google Camera APK, enable navigation gesture, enable face unlock, viper4android etc. and many more.

    WARNING:
    Installing a custom recovery in the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 via this method will TRIP THE KNOX and will VOID the warranty of your device. This guide will also delete all the data on your device. You may follow this guide to backup all data on your phone. YOU are the only person making changes to your device, neither the developer(s) nor I can be held responsible in anyway for any disaster that happens as a consequence of following this guide.

     

    TWRP RECOVERY AND ROOTING GUIDE FOR GALAXY TAB S2 9.7 T819 2016

    REQUIRED DOWNLOADS AND LINKS FOR THIS TWRP AND ROOTING GUIDE OF GALAXY TAB S2 9.7 SM-T819 2016 VARIANT:

     

    STEP BY STEP TWRP RECOVERY AND ROOTING GUIDE FOR GALAXY TAB S2 9.7 SM-T819 2016:

    The complete process will be split into two things as following:

    1. Installing the TWRP based custom recovery
    2. Installing the ROOT package using the TWRP custom recovery

    NOTE:
    Make sure that you have already downloaded all of the above mentioned files and done the following things:
    – Installed the driver for your phone
    – Installed the ODIN application on your PC before proceeding further
    – Enables USB debugging and OEM unlock from Developer Options

    WARNING:

    Please close the KIES application if it is running in the background. It may prevent the ODIN application to ROOT your device successfully.

    This will delete all your data on your phone. IGNORE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO OR IF YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE THIS. You may consider complete backup of your phone data or take a NANDROID backup of the current ROM.
    – How to backup all data on your Android Device.
    – how to take NANDROID backup using TWRP recovery.

    Installing the TWRP custom recovery on Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 SM-T819 2016:

    1. Follow this guide to enable USB debugging and OEM unlock, if not yet done.
    2. Put your phone into download mode.

      To enter into the download mode, Press and hold these three buttons until you see a WARNING SCREEN!:
      Volume DOWN keys + Power key + Home key

      When you see the WARNING SCREEN press the volume UP key to continue into the recovery mode.

    3. Open the ODIN application on your PC. Connect your device (while it is still in the download mode) to the PC using a USB cable.
      ODIN will show an Added! message on the message box.
      Device Added on ODIN
    4. Click on the AP button on the ODIN application, browse and select the twrp_3.0.2-1_sm-t819_31816.tar file downloaded earlier.

      Click on the AP button and select the TWRP recovery file

    5. Select the appropriate options before flashing the recovery image. Only the Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time should be checked and make sure all other boxes are un-checked.
      Select the ODIN Options
    6. Select the Start button, which will start the flashing process. When you get the PASS message on ODIN, then your phone will reboot automatically.
      Click on Start and wait till it completes

    You may disconnect your phone and proceed for the next process

    ROOTING GALAXY TAB S2 9.7 SM-T819 2016 VARIANT USING TWRP RECOVERY:

    NOTE:
    Rooting guide will only work after the custom recovery installation.
    If you will SKIP the custom recovery installation process and perform only these steps then rooting will not be done.

    If there is no in-built ROOT or it does not work for some reason then you can try SuperSU rooting guide to enable ROOT access.

    HOW TO INSTALL/DOWNLOAD/FLASH/UPDATE THE OFFICIAL LineageOS 15.1 for Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 2016 Wifi:

    Follow this if you are flashing LineageOS 15.1 for Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 2016 Wifi for the first time, or coming from UNOFFICIAL LineageOS 15.1 ROM or any other custom ROM of any Android version:

    NOTE:
    If you are on an OFFICIAL LineageOS 14.1 ROM then follow the LineageOS 15.1 Upgrade guide in the next section to upgrade to the OFFICIAL LineageOS 15.1.

     

    Points to NOTE:
    – Try to avoid restoring apps backup using Titanium Backup. It may break things up.
    – Don’t restore system data using Titanium Backup! It will definitely break the current installation.
    – It is also discouraged to Restoring Apps + Data using Titanium Backup.

    • Boot into Recovery.

      Make sure to have a Custom recovery like CWM or TWRP or any other custom recovery on your phone. If you don’t have then download the recovery for Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 2016 Wifi from above link and follow the Custom Recovery Installation Guide (it’s a generic guide which will work for TWRP as well as CWM recovery or any other recovery) provided it is in .img file extension.

    • Wipe data or do a factory reset, wipe Cache partition, wipe Dalvik Cache (if there is an option on the recovery) and Format the System partition.
      – Here is a guide explaining how to wipe data using TWRP recovery.

      This will delete all your data on your phone. You may consider complete backup of your phone data or take a NANDROID backup of the current ROM

      – how to take NANDROID backup using TWRP recovery

    • Download and Copy the LineageOS 15.1 Oreo GApps, SuperSU or any other ROOT package and the LineageOS 15.1 ROM ZIP file to the phone or SD card memory.
    • First flash the LineageOS 15.1 ROM ZIP file from device. DON’T REBOOT YET. Then flash the GApps and/or supersu zip from your device memory WITHOUT rebooting.

    • Reboot and Enjoy Android Oreo on the OFFICIAL LineageOS 15.1 for Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 2016 Wifi.

    Upgrading from earlier version of OFFICIAL LineageOS 14.1 or LineageOS 15.1 for Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 2016 Wifi (gts28vewifi):

    If you are on an OFFICIAL LineageOS 14.1 (yes, I mean the Android Nougat based OFFICIAL LineageOS 14.1) then you don’t need to wipe the data and you can upgrade to the OFFICIAL LineageOS 15.1 just by cleaning the system partition.

    • Copy the latest LineageOS 15.1 for Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 2016 Wifi ZIP file, Oreo 8.1 GApps and/or supersu ROOT package to the phone or use the updater app to download the LineageOS 15.1.

      NOTE:
      – If you are on an OFFICIAL LineageOS 14.1 then you will be allowed to download the latest OFFICIAL LineageOS 15.1 using the updater app but you won’t be allowed to upgrade to LineageOS 15.1 on top of LineageOS 14.1
      – So, you need to export the downloaded LineageOS 15.1 ROM build file to the SD card or phone memory from the updater app:
      You can export the downloaded package to the sdcard/phone memory from the Updater app by long-pressing the downloaded file and then selecting “Export” on the top menu

    • Boot into Recovery.

      – Make sure you have a latest custom Recovery that should be able to flash the LineageOS 15.1 ROM update.

    • Format or wipe the system partition from the custom recovery menu.
    • First install the OFFICIAL LineageOS 15.1 ROM ZIP file from device. DON’T REBOOT YET. Then flash the GApps and/or supersu zip from your device memory WITHOUT rebooting.

      Points to NOTE:

    Samsung Galaxy TAB S2 SM-T817R4 US Cellular devices are getting official Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update. Here is a very simple Step By Step guide to update the Marshmallow Update Manually on the Samsung Galaxy TAB S2 SM-T817R4. Just grab the Firmware update using the SamFirm utility as explained in the below section and then follow the manual OTA update process to get the latest update.

    Before downloading the OTA and update the same manually, you should check if the OTA is available for your device or not.
    To check for the OTA Update, Go to Settings -> About Phone -> Software Update -> Check for Update

     

    DISCLAIMER:
    Manually updating the firmware will WIPE EVERYTHING on your phone. Make sure you do a backup using a synchronization application or using Samsung Smart Switch or if you have TWRP installed then you can take a NANDROID backup using the TWRP itself. I am not at all responsible if anything happens to your phone as a consequence of following this guide but I can assure you that I will help you as far as possible to get you out of the problem (if something happens).
